Portugal’s Golden Visa: What’s Actually Happening in 2026?

The Let's PortuGo Weekly Newsletter

Weekly insights about life in Portugal and how to make it happen.

Olá Reader,

If you haven't checked out the first few issues of this lil' newsletter, you can find them on our profile HERE.

Portugal's new president, António José Seguro, was sworn in yesterday (March 9th) and gave his first speech to the nation and pledged to usher in stability for the country and unity between the country's political parties. Seguro, a center-left candidate, won against André Ventura, a far-right candidate, iin the election last February where Portuguese citizens showed up in record numbers despite the storms pounding the nation.

I feel hopeful that Seguro will lead the country in a positive direction.

This issue's focus:

Some updates about the Golden Visa program; job opportunities; resources; and a cool thing we're working on.

Is the Golden Visa Still a Thing?

If you’re like most of us, you’ve probably heard a lot of noise about Portugal’s Golden Visa program—some of it helpful, some of it… not so much. Here’s the real scoop, written just for you, with all the latest info (and none of the legal jargon or scare tactics).

So, is it still a thing? Short answer: Yes! Despite all the rumors and political drama, the Golden Visa is alive and kicking. The five-year path to residency and citizenship is still the law. And the physical presence rule? Still one of the easiest in Europe—think seven days a year, not seven months.

What’s Changed (and What Hasn’t)

  • No More Real Estate Route: The days of scooping up a Lisbon apartment for your visa are over. Now, it’s all about regulated investment funds (minimum €500,000) or cultural heritage donations (€250,000+).
  • Family Comes Too: Spouse, kids, dependent parents—they’re all welcome on your application. Everyone gets access to healthcare, schools, and the freedom to roam the Schengen Area.
  • Processing Times: Things are speeding up thanks to digitization, but you’ll still want to budget 12–18 months for approval. (Portugal time is real, folks.)
  • Citizenship Pathway: After five years, you can apply for citizenship—just be ready to show your Portuguese language skills and a clean record. The clock starts when your permit is issued, and the five-year rule stands.

Why Now Might Be the Sweet Spot

Other European residency programs are tightening up or shutting down altogether. Portugal’s is still open—and if you start now, you’re protected by today’s rules, even if things change later. This isn’t a “get in quick” scheme; it’s a real, stable path for people thinking long-term.

Is This for You?

If you want flexibility, EU access, and a realistic shot at citizenship for your family, Portugal’s Golden Visa is still one of the best options out there. Just make sure you’re working with someone who knows the ropes.

Job Opportunity

We get a lot of people asking us about jobs. It's not really something that Let's PortuGo handles (we help with visas and real estate), but occasionally we do come across various opportunities.

This is kind of random, but I've been using Dashlane Password manager since it was first released over 15 years ago. I like to use secure passwords and Dashlane makes it super easy to do that. Anyway, the other day, I noticed that they have a branch of their offices in Portugal! And not only that, they're hiring for various software engineer positions, but also call center positions. If you're considering a move to Portugal (or you're already there), you might want to check them out:

Another place you can look for English-speaking jobs in Portugal is English Jobs Portugal (yeah, clever title). This is not an endorsement of the site, but it's worth checking out. It just aggregates jobs posted elsewhere, but what I like about it is the way the listings are organized by district and by city. Really helpful for focusing your search.

Another Portugal Resource

This one is probably a "no duh" moment, but just in case you haven't come across it or you don't spend much time on Facebook, I wanted to give a shout out to the "Moving To Portugal" Facebook group. One of our recent clients mentioned that she has really gotten a lot of good use out of it, so that gave me the idea that maybe I should flag it up here.

Head over here to check it out: https://www.facebook.com/groups/movingtoportugal2.0

We're working on something

You may or may not know this, but Let's PortuGo helps people apply for their visa's in Portugal from start to finish. Our pricing is transparent and on the lower end of the spectrum for immigration assistance, but even still, it can be out of the budget for some. And hey, some people just want to do things themselves.

We're working on a solution for that: a DIY course! It will walk you through the process of applying for the visa, step by step. From determining eligibility to gathering documents to attending the VFS appointment. And we'll have some "a la carte" add on options for anyone that wants a little extra help or wants to get some legal advice.

I don't have a solid timeline for when the course will be ready, but our goal is to roll it out sometime in the next couple of months. Stay tuned!

That's it for this week! Stay tuned to your inbox for more of The Let's PortuGo Newsletter...
